What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Recipes by Email

If you sign up for recipes by email, your email address will be stored on MailChimp’s servers for the sole purpose of sending out recipes by email and other relevant content. The data will only be kept as long as you subscribe to this service. I won’t share your data with any other third parties than those used to provide this service and you can unsubscribe at any time.


When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

If you use the contact form in the About Me page, your email address and any other information you submit will be used solely in order to reply to your query, and kept as long as is necessary to resolve your query or deal with any other requests you make.


If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Who we share your data with

Data is only ever shared with third parties for the sole purpose of administering the relevant service.

If you comment on my blog, your data will be shared with Automattic who produce the back-up plugin and spam detection plugin I use.

If you use my contact form your data will be held in my Rackspace mailbox. The data will be sent via Contact Form 7.

If you subscribe to Recipes by Email your email address will be shared with Mailchimp.

Browsing analyitics about your visit are shared with Google.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

Data submitted via our content form will be retained for as long as necessary, and if you subscribe to our mailing list your details will be kept only as long as you subscribe.

What rights you have over your data

You can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
